If you have started swapping single-use plastic out of the house, your tea is probably the last place you would think to look.
The bag goes in the caddy, the tea seems like a plant, and that feels like the end of it. Then a headline tells you that ordinary tea bags are made with plastic, and the daily cuppa suddenly looks less innocent.
The real picture sits in the middle: many tea bags do contain plastic, some contain none, and telling the two apart takes about a minute once you know what to look for. Here is what is actually in a tea bag, how to check the ones in your cupboard, and the plastic-free ways to brew that don't ask you to give up a good cup of tea.
Many are, though usually not in the way people picture. Most tea bags are still made mainly from paper or plant fibre, but a large share are held shut with a thin plastic sealing layer, normally polypropylene, so the bag holds its shape in hot water and the seam stays closed. The silky pyramid bags are a different thing again: those are often a full mesh of nylon or PET, which is plastic the whole way through. When a plastic bag sits in freshly boiled water, some of that plastic breaks down into tiny fragments. One widely reported study found that a single mesh bag brewed at 95C released roughly 11.6 billion microplastic and 3.1 billion nanoplastic particles into the cup. So the short version is that the leaf is not the problem. The bag can be.

You can usually work it out in under a minute, three ways. Start with the box: brands that have gone plastic-free tend to say so plainly, with wording like "plastic-free", "fully compostable", or a named material such as PLA or "made from plant starch". Silence on the packaging is a fair hint the bag still uses a plastic seal, though it is not proof.
Next, look at the bag itself. A smooth, slightly shiny pyramid that holds a crisp shape is usually nylon or PET; a soft paper pouch is more likely fibre with a sealed edge. Then the stretch test: take a used, cooled bag and pull it apart at the sealed seam. Paper tears cleanly, while a plastic seal stretches or leaves a thin filmy strip before it gives.
One thing worth knowing about the greener-looking options: "compostable" PLA bags are a cornstarch-based bioplastic, but most only break down in an industrial composting facility. A garden heap won't get hot enough, so they still need the right food-waste bin to live up to the label.

The clear, uncontested problem is waste. A plastic seal or a nylon mesh turns an otherwise compostable cup of tea into something that leaves plastic behind, every day, in the bin. The health side is less settled. The 11.6 billion figure above was striking enough that other researchers questioned the method, arguing that some of what was counted may be soft, soluble clumps rather than solid microplastics.
Reviews since then have looked at whether the particles that do come off could matter for health, and the fair summary is that this is an active area of study rather than a closed case. You don't need a final verdict to make the call, though. If a swap takes avoidable plastic out of something you drink several times a day, and it costs you almost nothing, that stands on its own.
You have two easy routes, and neither means giving up your routine. The lowest-effort option is to switch to a tea sold in certified plastic-free or fully compostable bags: same habit, no plastic seal, and you can put the used bag on the garden heap if the box says home-compostable (many are only industrially compostable), but they may still contain the nasty glues. The other route skips the bag altogether. Loose leaf brewed in a small stainless-steel basket infuser, or a pot with a built-in strainer, gives you whole tea with nothing sealed around it. It takes about twenty seconds more than dropping in a bag, the infuser lasts for years, and there is a genuine flavour reason to bother.
The reason loose leaf tends to taste better is simple: room. A tea bag has to hold small, broken pieces, because whole leaves and larger botanicals would not fit or brew evenly in that little pouch. Give the same tea room in an infuser and the leaves open fully, so you draw more flavour from less and can usually re-steep a good leaf a second time. It is also the surest way to know there is no plastic near the cup, because there is no bag to seal in the first place.
If you want to see that difference at its most obvious, look at a whole-botanical herbal blend. Rare Tea Company's loose-leaf Himalayan Ginger and Lemongrass is a good example: it is made of visible pieces of ginger and stalks of lemongrass, the kind of thing you plainly could not mill down and pack into a sachet. The London company buys direct from the growers and single estates it works with, skipping the commodity auction, which is the sort of sourcing a supermarket blend can't really trace. Loose leaf does cost a little more per cup and needs an infuser you will have to rinse, so it is the swap for people who want the plastic gone and the flavour up, not the absolute cheapest brew.
A growing number. Look for brands that state "plastic-free" or "fully compostable" on the box, and remember that any tea you brew loose has no bag at all. Named examples change often and vary by country, so the packaging wording and the stretch test are more reliable than a fixed list.
Not necessarily. A certified plastic-free bag solves the plastic problem while keeping the convenience, so you don't have to change how you make tea. The stronger case for stopping is if you are still using standard bags with a polypropylene seal and want both the plastic and the waste gone.
Only if the box says home-compostable. Many bags are labelled "compostable" but mean industrial composting, which reaches higher temperatures than a garden heap ever will; those belong in a food-waste collection, since the compost bin won't break them down.

Plastic-free tea is one of the simpler swaps to make, which is part of why it is worth doing. Start with the box you already own and give one used bag the stretch test. If it turns out to be plastic-sealed and that bothers you, you have two straightforward moves: a certified compostable bag to keep the same routine, or loose leaf with a steel infuser for a bit more flavour and no bag at all. Either way the eco-friendly cup of tea stays exactly as good, and the plastic quietly drops out of the daily round.
